    Social Determinants of Health

    IHI works on addressing Social Determinants of Health through programs and projects like the Opportunity House, NKU CARE Closet, and Geek Your Health events.

    Chronic Illness: Substance Use Disorder

    Since 2018, Chronic Illness has been a main focus of the IHI's initiatives. As Kentucky continues to rank toward the bottom of health outcomes in the United States, this focus is critical to addressing population health issues facing our communities.

    Future Health Leaders

    IHI and NKU are uniquely positioned in northern Kentucky to create a pipeline to reduce the future healthcare worker shortage and bring underserved and minority students into healthcare programs. We develop new ways to prepare students for an increasingly technological and collaborative role through our programs for students.

    Accelerating Innovation

    In collaboration with community and business partners, we leverage our expertise to support health innovation centers of excellence in the Northern Kentucky region and provide funding opportunities for NKU staff research through programs like Faculty Fellows.

    Evaluation

    The Collaborative for Program Evaluation and Implementation Science harnesses the power of data to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities using improvement science. Our work meets the unique needs of our partners, who want to advance their programs or policies to transform individual lives, systems, and communities. An interdisciplinary working group, we have the knowledge, expertise, and experience to serve as your evaluation and research partner with particular subject matter expertise in public health, healthcare, and health innovation.

IHI Highlight: EDA UC Grant

Northern Kentucky University received a $1.1 million three-year grant from the Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) University Center program. The grant will support NKU’s innovative efforts in expanding its Human Services and Addiction program, aiming to reduce health disparities in the underserved communities.

NKU gets $2.4M from NIH to boost human services paraprofessionals

Northern Kentucky University has been awarded $2.4 million from the National Institute of Health’s Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to provide students in NKU human services programs with scholarships, stipends for field placement and apprenticeship support. Human services encompass a range of professions that support individuals in improving their quality of life.

Using a grant, the university started Amplify NKU, an effort to connect students, particularly BIPOC, LGBTQ, and international students, to the broader life of the university.
